For members of the chronic illness community, summer can bring on a new level of difficulties. The summer heat can flare up a host of symptoms for many warriors, whether you have an autoimmune disease in nature, lupus, fibromyalgia, ehlers-danlos, lyme disease, dysautonomia, multiple sclerosis, or any other chronic illness.  I don’t know about you, but I personally don’t want to have to spend the entire summer indoors hiding. I have 3 boys so my summer requires me to make it to baseball games regardless of the heat.  I am going to be sharing some products that can make life in the summer more bearable.  Just a side note you will see a lot of products from amazon, as of now I am not an affiliate for them or anyone else in this post, I just shop a lot on amazon!

In my efforts to prep for summer this year I learned about all kinds of new products.  This first product is a cooling sun visor.  I like the fact it’s cooling and cute.  This company makes cooling hats as well but I like visors better.  I feel more airflow on the top of the head makes you cooler but that is my preference.  Double bonus is it blocks the sun.

Mission also makes cooling gaiters which are nice because you can put them up over your nose if you would like, or you can even wear them as headbands also! I love dual purpose! Mission Multi-Cool 12 in 1 Multifunctional Gaiter and Headwear

Mission Multi-Cool 12 in 1 Multifunctional Gaiter and Headwear BlueWhether you would like to go to the beach, a concert, or perhaps a ballgame, shade is your friend don’t leave home without an umbrella.  I like an umbrella with a clamp so that I am able to attach it to my walker or to my folding chair.Sport-Brella Versa-Brella SPF 50+ Adjustable Umbrella Sport-Brella Versa-Brella 4-Way Swiveling Sun Umbrella (Midnight Blue), 38x39

The mission gaiter dries out quickly and doesn’t stay that cold. I do think chilly pads stay cooler longer.  They are not that fashionable but definitely have their place! An important part of surviving summer is being able to sleep at night.  We decided this year to purchase a cooling memory gel foam mattress pad to add comfort and control temperature.Linenspa 3 Inch Gel Swirl Memory Foam Topper – QueenLinenspa 3 Inch Gel Swirl Memory Foam Topper - Queen,

Top your nice new mattress pad off with a cooling weighted blanket.  This will not only give you temperature control but it also calms the nervous system.Nuzzie Cooling Weighted Blanket - 15 lbs - Queen - 60x80 - Adult or Teen - 100% Soft Cotton - Hypoallergenic Glass Beads - Designed in USANuzzie Cooling Weighted Blanket – 15 lbs – Queen – 60×80 – Adult or Teen – 100% Soft Cotton – Hypoallergenic Glass Beads –

Now that we got you sleeping like a baby, I want to make sure you don’t forget to protect your skin outdoors from the sun and the bugs.  Us spoonies have to be very careful about what toxins we expose ourselves to so I am very particular when it comes to things I put on my skin. I recommend L’BRI sunblock

I think that Buggins is hands down the most effective natural bug spray I have ever used and trust me I have used a LOT!!BUGGINS Natural Insect Repellent 0% DEET

As I am wrapping this up, I hate to sound cliché but, I saved the best for last!  The single most important thing we need to do is stay hydrated and keep are electrolytes balanced.Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier, Electrolyte Powder, Easy Open Packets, Supplement Drink Mix (Lemon Lime, 16 Count)

Liquid I.V. is spendy  but many with dysautonomia say that it is the holy grail to have in your emergency bag.  Cheaper options would include propel and other sports drinks depending on your needs.

Well there you have it, my favorite summer survival tips. I hope some of this will be useful in making summer more pleasurable.  No one should have to be a prisoner in their home.  Until we meet again enjoy life!
